Living in Cooke Township in Central PA
Cooke Township is located south of Carlisle Borough in Cumberland County Pennsylvania. It is a very rural area on the southwestern corner of the county bordered on the south by Adams County. It is a unique and beautiful setting tucked into the South Mountain Range specifically on South Mountain Poper and Piney Mountain in a small valley of Mountain Creek.
This amazing mountainous location is home to just under 180 residents according to the most recent census taken. There's a collection of great properties with plenty of space to spread out in this area just outside of larger boroughs in Cumberland County. Portions of the township carry Newville mailing addresses and ZIP Codes and others carry Gardeners ZIP Codes and mailing addresses. But the township itself has its own government system of Township supervisors.
History of Cooke Township
The township is named after Jay Cooke one of the original investors who purchased South Mountain Iron Company at Pine Grove Furnace in 1864. The charcoal-fired iron operation dates back to 1764. The township was created as a breakoff from the existing township in the area which was Penn Township, established in 1860. The reason for the new township named after Jay Cooke is unclear. Cooke lost his iron company for a short time and purchased it back with the help of a group of investors renaming it the South Mountain Mining and Iron Company. Kirk was a beloved member of the community who loved to fish and spend time outdoors as well as bring gifts to the small school for his workers' children. Though the iron business no longer runs Pine Grove Furnace is a national treasure and is a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977.
What is a Township?
